Annual Reception

2010 Living in the City 20th Anniversary Benefit

More than 180 THC supporters helped celebrate THC’s 20th Anniversary at the 2010 Living in the City benefit that was held on Thursday, May 27 at the Washington Club.  THC’s annual event, hosted by Barbara Harrison, NBC 4 Midday Anchor and Special Reporter, celebrated the hard work and achievements of 2 former Partner Arms transitional housing clients, Imani Walker and Gail Parker, as well as two current THC clients, Shamekia Murray, a Partner Arms 2 client, and Sherrena Duncan, a permanent supportive housing client.  Each of them gave poignant speeches about their path to THC housing programs and how their lives have been enriched through the supportive programs.  Please read their stories here.

Event Speaker: Fred Karnas, H.U.D.

THC was honored to award the THC Housing Leadership Award to its very first government partner, the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  In 1990, by approving THC’s application to renovate a 14-unit building on Kennedy Street, NW, HUD opened the doors to a better life for what would become hundreds of homeless families.  HUD’s foresight, funding and continued support have helped sustain THC for 20 years.  HUD and THC are now partnered in five HUD-funded housing programs.  HUD helped bring make the vision of THC’s founders into a reality.  In his acceptance speech, Fred Karnas, Senior Advisor to HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, remarked that HUD is excited about its enduring partnership with THC and looks forward to partnering together in future programs and projects.

Event Speaker: Ralph F. Boyd, Jr., Freddie Mac Foundation

THC was equally honored to award the THC Community Leadership Awards to The Freddie Mac Foundation.  The Freddie Mac Foundation’s mission is simple and profound.  “Its mission is to make home a place where children and their families thrive.”  Freddie Mac Foundation’s support allowed THC to leverage more support from other important foundations that have, in turn, helped us to expand our important supportive services such as housing, employment, mental health and life-skills counseling.  Since 2000, the Freddie Mac Foundation’s investment of over $1.1 million in THC’s continuum of housing and supportive services, including funding for affordable housing, has given THC the resources to make a tremendous impact on helping to end homelessness.  “It has been wonderful to see THC grow from a small but determined group of volunteers to what it is today: a partner all of us in the community rely on to improve the lives of vulnerable children and families,” said Ralph F. Boyd, Jr., President and CEO, Freddie Mac Foundation.  “THC is a Foundation partner that continues to build on its success to provide not only transitional housing programs, but permanent supportive housing and affordable housing with resident services.”

THC is grateful to its sponsors for their generosity and support and for making the celebration of our 20th Anniversary a huge success.
